Tangled Trefoil Knot

The red and gold curves are known as trefoil knots to math-types. The gold curve is one of the standard forms of the trefoil, and the red curves are simply perturbations of the standard form. The trefoil is, mathematically speaking, the simplest knot. The lighting in this image is achieved by carefully arranging several spotlights and one point light. Povray is the package that was used for the final rendering. The tori were generated by a perl script, and actually consist of many spheres packed very closely along the curves defining the trefoils -- this image was produced before the sphere sweep existed in Povray. To get a better idea of what a trefoil is, take a look at this picture.
